List of Tips

Here is a couple of DO NOT DEDUCT:

People tried to deduct doggie day care. Their logic, the dog was their child and if child care was allowed for human children, it should be allowed for their canine child. The IRS did not agree.

A landscaper deducted expenses for his dog because the dog would pull a wagon on landscaping jobs. The landscaper listed the dog as an independent contractor. The IRS disallowed the deduction because a 1099 was not issued due to lack of a social security number.

Last dog story, an individual who bred show dogs took a charitable deduction for a dog he donated to the local animal rescue league. The IRS denied the deduction because the puppy was born on the farm and the breeder did not pay for the puppy. Had the breeder paid for the puppy and then donated it that would have been allowed.
