I know I have sent this tip before but thieves are working the internet and the telephone!
The IRS does NOT communicate by e-mail. They mainly communicate through the U.S. Post Office and very rarely by telephone.
If you receive and e-mail stating you are due a larger refund or they want to verify information you need to delete it. Do NOT give out any information over the telephone to anyone unless you have verified the caller.
If you think the caller or e-mail is legitimate, you can call the IRS at 800-829-1040. The official IRS website ends in .gov. If you see that the e-mail address ends in .com, .net, or .org that is another indication that the e-mail is a scam.
This information is provided in an effort to help you gather and organize the information necessary to file your individual or small business income tax return. While these financial tools are not a substitute for financial advice from a qualified professional, they can be used as a starting point in your decision making process.
