Free Tax Tip No. 378: Items to check before filing Return to
List of Tips

If you have not yet filed, here are a few things to check:

1) Make certain that all identification numbers are correct and they match the name for which they are used. We have discovered that some women have not changed their social security numbers when they marry or children who have not had their names legally changed.

2) Double-check your figures if you are paper filing to make certain there are no math errors.

3) Make certain you are using the correct tax table if you are paper filing.

4) Sign your return and use the coded envelope if you are paper filing. Different types of returns are filed in different sections of the country. You may not file at the service center closest to your home.

5) If you owe and are enclosing a check, be sure to make the check out to “United States Treasury.” Put your name and social security number on the check along with “2008 – 1040 Tax Payment.”

6) Consider electronically filing your return and having your refund direct deposited or direct debited from your account if you owe money. This is the fastest and easiest way to file. You should have your refund in your account in less than two weeks.

7) If you are waiting for a refund, remember the IRS does money transactions on Fridays. If you are waiting for a refund, it will be deposited on Friday at 12:01 midnight or if you owe, they will zap your account at the same time.

On a personal note:
