Free Tax Tip No. 407: Changes to Your Last Name Return to
List of Tips

In the last few tax tips we discussed filing status, if yours recently changed because you were married or divorced in 2009, there are few things you must consider.

If you took your spouse’s last name or if both spouses hyphenate their last names, you may run into complications if you do not notify Social Security Administration and have new Social Security cards issued in the new names. In order to properly file electronically and have the IRS issue refund checks in a timely manner, last names must match Social Security Administration information.

This is true if you were recently divorced and change your name as part of the divorce process. You must contact Social Security Administration (SSA). SSA will NOT automatically be notified of that change. That is the taxpayer’s responsibility.

In order to change your name, you will need to file a Form SS-5, “Application for a Social Security Card.” This is available on SSA’s website, www.socialsecurity.gov or by calling 800-772-1213. It will take about two weeks to have the change verified.
